Malayalam (മലയാളം) is the official language of Kerala, Lakshadweep, and the Mahe district of Puducherry. Kerala Public Service Commission (Kerala PSC) recruitments for clerical, data-entry, Confidential Assistant, and stenographer posts include a Malayalam typing component — typically at 30 WPM with 95%+ accuracy.
Malayalam typing exams use the Malayalam Inscript layout — the Unicode-standard layout pre-installed on Windows, Mac, and Linux. Beyond the standard Indian Inscript principles, Malayalam Inscript has a unique chillu (half-consonant) system: ർ, ൻ, ൽ, ൾ, ൺ are pure consonants that don't take vowels. These appear at syllable ends and require precise keystroke sequence — getting them wrong is the most common Malayalam typing failure mode.
Malayalam has 15 vowels (സ്വരം) and 36 consonants (വ്യഞ്ജനം), making it one of the richest Indian scripts in character count. Common typing challenges include vowel modifiers, conjunct ligatures (ക്ഷ, ജ്ഞ, ന്ത്ര), the chillu system mentioned above, and traditional vs reformed orthography (the 1971 script reform simplified some conjuncts but older texts use legacy forms).
Weeks 1–2: 15-minute daily Malayalam Inscript drills covering vowels, consonants, and chillu letters specifically. Weeks 3–4: passage practice on this page targeting 25 WPM with 99% accuracy. Weeks 5–6: push speed to 35 WPM (margin above the 30 WPM threshold) while holding 96%+ accuracy. Add the exam simulator two days a week.

Kerala Public Service Commission (Kerala PSC) recruitments for Lower Division Clerk (LDC), Junior Assistant, Confidential Assistant, and Steno-Typist posts include Malayalam typing. Lakshadweep and some Mahe (Puducherry) recruitment also tests Malayalam. Always verify with the year-specific notification.
30 WPM with 95%+ accuracy is the standard threshold for most Kerala PSC clerical posts. Confidential Assistant and steno-typist roles may require 40 WPM. English is usually offered as an alternative — choose whichever you read and write fluently.
Malayalam Inscript is the Unicode standard required by most government exams. Mozhi is a popular phonetic transliteration scheme used in some typing institutes but not on exam computers. Use Inscript directly from the first practice session.
Marginally yes. Malayalam has a richer set of vowels (15) and a complex chillu (half-letter) system that requires precise keystroke order. Existing Hindi Inscript typists need 2–3 weeks to adapt to Malayalam Inscript.
Settings → Time & Language → Language → Add a language → Malayalam (India). Install the Malayalam Inscript keyboard. Toggle between English and Malayalam input with Alt + Shift.
Chillus (ർ, ൻ, ൽ, ൾ, ൺ) are special half-consonant forms unique to Malayalam — no other Indian script has them. They appear at the end of syllables and require a specific keystroke sequence in Inscript. Drilling chillus is essential for Malayalam typing accuracy.
Native Malayalam speakers learning Inscript from scratch typically need 6–8 weeks of daily 20-minute practice to reach 30 WPM with 95%+ accuracy. The chillu-letter complexity adds 1–2 weeks compared to other Indian-language Inscript layouts.
Once you're consistently above your target threshold here, switch to the strict exam simulator for pass/fail scoring that mirrors actual government typing exam conditions.
