Beginner's Guide to Hindi Typing: Inscript & Remington Layouts
Hindi typing for government exams requires mastery of Inscript or Remington keyboards. This guide walks you through the basics and links to practice sets.
Hindi typing is a mandatory skill for dozens of government jobs in India โ from clerical positions to data entry roles. The two main keyboard layouts are Inscript and Remington (Kruti Dev).
Inscript layout. Inscript (Indian Script) is the standard layout recommended by the Government of India and built into Windows, Mac, and Linux. It maps Devanagari characters logically โ vowels on the left, consonants on the right.
Remington (Kruti Dev) layout. Remington is an older layout based on the physical typewriter. Many older government systems still use it. Kruti Dev is a popular Remington-style font. SSC and UPSC exams often specify which layout is acceptable.
Which to learn? Check the exam notification carefully. SSC CGL and CHSL generally accept Inscript or Mangal font. State government exams vary. If unspecified, Inscript is the safer choice for future-proofing.
Learning Devanagari keyboard positions. Unlike English, many Devanagari characters require two keystrokes (consonant + matra). Learning matra combinations is the most time-consuming part of Hindi typing.
Speed targets for exams. Most Hindi typing tests require 25โ30 WPM (words per minute in Hindi). A Hindi 'word' is defined as 5 keystrokes, same as English. 30 WPM in Hindi requires fluency with all matras and common conjuncts.
Practice resources. Our Hindi Typing Test at `/exams/hindi-typing-test` provides Devanagari practice passages at increasing difficulty. Start with vowel-heavy sentences, then progress to consonant clusters.
Timeline. With 30 minutes of daily practice, most beginners reach 20 WPM in 6โ8 weeks and exam-ready speed (30 WPM) in 3โ4 months.
